Biographical sketch:

Timothy Bailey Sweet was born in Farmington, Maine, on 11 April 1841, the son of Lorella and Mary W. Bailey-Sweet. The family moved to Champaign, Illinois, in 1859. Both in Maine and in Illinois, Sweet held positions as a clerk, including with the drug and then the insurance business, before becoming a bank cashier. In 1873 he married Annie Brown in Jacksonville, Illinois.

In 1872 Sweet moved to Topeka, Kansas, and began a busy business career. He organized and was president of the Kansas Loan & Trust Company and its successor, the Trust Company of America; he was president of the Kaw Milling Company; he held directorship positions with the Bank of Topeka, Bell Telephone Company, and the Topeka Pure Milk Company; was a trustee for Washburn College; and held many other such positions. He was a Republican and attended the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Sweet and his wife had at least four children who survived to adulthood. Annie Brown Sweet died on 27 November 1910; T. B. Sweet died in 1918 at home in Topeka at the age of 77.

Abstract: The collection consists of five small volumes and some correspondence and a certificate appointing Sweet as a notary public for Shawnee County, Kansas, in 1878. The correspondence includes letters to members of the Brown family from Jacksonville, Illinois, Sweet's in-laws. One of the volumes also appears to be from the Brown family, perhaps Judge William Brown, as it includes notes on court cases. The other four volumes belonged to Sweet throughout his life from Maine to Topeka, Kan., and include financial information such as tax information on land owned by Sweet and regarding personal income & disbursements as well as some diary entries, mostly noting the weather and Sweet's activities for that day.
