Abstract: The collection consists of assembled materials from various sources providing information on the history of Rice County, Kansas. It includes township bonds for Atlanta and Union; information about soldiers killed at a stone corral in the 1880s; letters, including photocopies of letters from early settlers, notably Emily Isobelle Combes; reminiscences and historical sketches about the county; research materials gathered by Sondra Van Meter McCoy regarding the Stone Corral; store at Cow Creek (Beach Valley) on the Santa Fe Trail, the Green and Martin families; and records of the Building Committee of the Methodist Church of Geneseo, including meeting minutes and financial information, for the years 1913-1918. Also includes one business ledger for Sterling Lumber Company, 1938-1941, owned by George & Carrie Fulkerson.

Administrative History

Administrative History: Rice is one of the central counties of Kansas, and is part of the area Coronado explored with his men while searching for Quivira. Rice County was created by the State Legislature of 1867 and was organized August 18, 1871. The county was named in honor of Samuel A. Rice, Brigadier General with the U.S. Volunteers, who was killed at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas on 30 April 1864.

Lyons is the county seat, and Sterling is another small city in Rice County. Townships include Atlanta, Bell, Center, East Washington, Eureka, Farmer, Galt, Harrison, Lincoln, Mitchell, Odessa, Pioneer, Raymond, Rockville, Sterling, Union, Valley, Victoria, West Washington, and Wilson Township.
