Abstract: This collection contains both paper and microfilmed records from Doniphan County, Kansas. The records date between 1855 and 1995. The paper records consist of one series, the Kansas Emergency Relief Committee/WPA Files, documenting Works Progress Administration programs throughout the county. These records date between 1932-1941.

The majority of the records are on microfilm originating from the county clerk, district court, probate court, register of deeds, superintendent of public instruction, and Highland Community College. Records from the county clerk include vital statistics, 1898-1916, and cemetery records from Troy, 1871-1913. The district court handled major civil and criminal cases, naturalization, divorces, monetary claims within a particular boundary (usually one or more counties), and similar matters. Records include civil appearance dockets, 1858-1923; journals, 1858-1918; judgment dockets, 1858-1926; marriage records, 1856-1921; and naturalization records, 1881-1934.

The probate court had jurisdiction over marriages, town incorporations, estates, wills, adoptions, insanities, delinquent and dependent children, and similar matters. Records include indexes, 1855-1991; abstracts, 1857-1870; journals, 1858-1923; judgment abstracts, 1856-1914; case files, 1857-1917; will records, 1876-1938; estate administrators records, 1878-1932; estate inventory and appraisement records, 1861-1917; sales of personal property and real estate records, 1875-1935; and settlements, 1857-1909. Records from the register of deeds document land sales and ownership. Records include deed records, 1856-1924; deed patents, 1860-1913; tax deeds, 1864-1919; land district records, 1858-1868; ledgers, 1860-1864; list of town lots, 1858-1881; and various deed indexes and abstracts, 1856-1913.

Records from the superintendent of public instruction include school census records dated 1892-1916. Highland Community College records document the college’s early Presbyterian history and into the 20th century, dated 1857-1995.

Administrative History

Administrative History: Doniphan County was established on August 25, 1855 and organized on September 18, 1855. It was named for Col. Alexander W. Doniphan (1808-1887), of Missouri, who commanded a regiment of cavalry during the Mexican War. It is located in the northeast corner of Kansas, bordering the Missouri River. Troy is the county seat. Townships include Burr Oak, Center, Independence, Iowa, Marion, Union, Washington, Wayne, and Wolf River.
