Biographical sketch: John Guthrie was an attorney, member of the Kansas House of Representatives, and later named the postmaster of Topeka. Guthrie was born on July 2, 1829 in Switzerland County, Indiana. He married Miss Mary C. H. Updegraff, a native of Ohio, in Logansport, Indiana. He served as a private and the captain of Company D, 46th Indiana Infantry until 1862. Guthrie arrived in Kansas in May of 1865. He was a Republican member of the House between 1868-1870 from district 41 in Topeka. Between 1885 to 1893 he served as judge of the Third Judicial District. In 1896 Guthrie was appointed postmaster of Topeka, resigning that office a few months before his death. Guthrie died on July 1, 1906.

Scope and Content

Scope and content: The John Guthrie collection includes correspondence, financial records, certifications of election from the Board of Canvassers, and military records. They document his personal life, as well as his tenure as a lawyer, legislator, and postmaster. Included is correspondence between various attorneys sent to President Benjamin Harrison in support of Guthrie being named a chief justice, correspondence between Guthrie and University of Kansas professor F. W. Blackmar concerning taxation and his teaching, correspondence documenting his time as Topeka postmaster, an article written on the legislature of 1868, and papers on case laws. Also included is correspondence with the Mississippi Valley Construction Company concerning the construction of the courthouse and post office in Topeka, circa 1915.
