Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full):

Ira Harvey Smith was born in Seymour, Connecticut, on 20 August 1815. He graduated from Yale University's theological school in New Haven in 1842 and was ordained in the Congregational Church. He preached until 1846 when ill health forced him to give up the pulpit. Also in 1846 he married Sarah Jane Bartholomew. In 1853 he went west to California for a year, speaking a year there before returning to Connecticut.

Smith did not remain in the east for long, however. In the fall of 1854 he went west again, to Kansas this time, where he assisted in surveying the northern boundary of the territory. Thereafter he settled in Brown County and was elected surveyor there in 1857 and 1859, as well as acting as one of the first incorporators of the town of Robinson in 1859. Smith served in the first state legislature in 1861, a Republican in the House of Representatives. He also served briefly as the receiver for the Kickapoo land office from 1861-1863 and as the register for the Lecompton land-office (in Topeka) from 1863 to 1873.

Ira Harvey Smith died in Topeka on 18 April 1883.
