Administrative History

Administrative History: The Military Sisterhood of the World War may have had its origins in the Spanish-American War. Charles I. Martin's wife took on the roles of caretaker and confidant for his regiment when he was captain of Co. F, 20th Kansas Infantry during that war. He was Adjutant General for Kansas when the United States entered the world war that had begun in 1914, and Mrs. Martin knew that some organized body was needed to care for the soldier's family during his absence. In the middle of June 1917, two months after the U.S. entered the war, the Military Sisterhood of Kansas (later called the National Military Sisterhood of America and finally the Military Sisterhood of the World War) was established. The organization provided loans, nurses, and for other needs and emergency relief on the home front. Local chapters were organized in Hutchinson, Wichita, Lawrence, Larned, Oskaloosa, Topeka, Perry, Coffyville, Herington, Downs, and in other states in the region around Kansas.
