Biog. Sketch (Full):

Warren Lebius Matthews was born 17 December 1877 near Marcellus, Michigan, to Lyman J. (1846-1916) and Mary A. Poorman (1852-1891) Matthews. He had a brother, William Henry (1862-1951), and a half-sister, Emily J. (1871-1881). Warren came to Clear Water, now Clearwater, Kansas, with his family and grew up on a farm.

He graduated from Clear Water High School and then enlisted in the Spanish-American War in 1898 and served in Company C, 21st Kansas Infantry Regiment.

He married Marion Francis Murphy (1879-1978) in 1899. They had a son who died young and another son, Kenneth Warren (1905-1973).

Matthews was a member of the Christian Church and the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges. He moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 1923 and was in the mercantile business, oil leasing, life insurance, and real estate.

Eventually he took up the study of history and genealogy. He traced his ancestors back to the Revolutionary War. Matthews traveled extensively searching libraries wherever he went. He was interested in Indian lore and searched old Indian campgrounds. He also looked for information on Chief Cochise. He worked to secure artifacts, and this led to a museum. Matthews traveled the route of the Chisholm Trail from Oklahoma to Wichita. He drew a map of the Trail and promoted markers to preserve it. Because of his work, the end of the Trail is marked in Wichita at Douglas Avenue as it crosses the Arkansas River.

Matthews died in Wichita on 30 July 1956. He, and Marion, are buried in Wichita Park Cemetery and Mausoleum there.
