The History of the State of Kansas. Alfred Thayer Andreas [with William G. Cutler]. Two Volumes. Chicago, A. T. Andreas, 1883. Reprinted in 1976 with an index of names from the fifteen thousand sketches found in the original volumes. Important for early county and community histories. [Library call number Ref./K/978.1/An32] Available online at the Kansas Collection.

Kansas Biographical Scrapbooks. These 182 volumes contain biographical clippings of varied sorts of information collected until the early 1900s. [Library call number K/BB/v. _/p. _]

Kansas Biographical Clippings File. Also known as the "Vertical File"; contains clippings about notable Kansas people compiled by the KSHS library, mostly from newspapers, and microfilmed in 1995. Available on interlibrary loan.

Taps. United Spanish War Veterans. An index to death notices of the members of this fraternal order of Spanish-American War veterans. The death notices may contain service record, wife's name and address, and/or place and date of birth, death and burial. [Library call number SP/369.18/Un3t/p._]

Journal of the Kansas Medical Society. Kansas Medical Society. An index to individuals whose obituaries appear in the journal 1889-1966 and 1981-1983. May include death date, residence, volume, and page. Between 1966-1981 obituries were cataloged into the Kansas card catalog in the KSHS reference room. [Library call number K/610.5/K13/v._/p._]

Kansas State Soldiers' Home Admissions and Military History of Members. c. 1890-1957. The Fort Dodge Soldiers' Home houses qualifying veterans and their families. It is located approximately 5 miles east of Dodge City, Kansas, on Highway 400 (formerly 154). The fort was built in 1865 to replace Fort Mann as a supply post for people and wagon trains traveling the Santa Fe Trail. The fort closed in 1882 and became the State Soldiers Home in 1890. The admission records of the Soldiers' Home usually contain information about their family and military service. Since they may also contain medical information which cannot be released, please fill out and submit our request form by mail to obtain copies from these records. [Archives microfim AR4478-AR4480].

Affidavits of Alien Enemies and Alien Females. Compiled by the U.S. Marshals Service in 1917-1918, these affidavits include men and women born in Germany or Austria-Hungary (and U.S.-born women who married men from these countries) who were not naturalized at the time of World War I. The affidavits are arranged by county, then gender, and contain photographs and immigration and birth information for the alien and their families. This database also includes names of people who appear in the summary lists but don't have individual records. These are federal records; the originals are at the National Archives Regional Branch in Kansas City and the Kansas Historical Society has a microfilm copy. [Archives microfilm AR1302-AR1311]
