View of James Septer Patrick's business building (Jas. S. Patrick Agent for Satanta Lots And Santa Fe Lands) in Satanta, Kansas. Also visible in the photograph are the Deal building and a water tower, both under construction, and people seated in four automobiles. The first two cars contain land buyers from Wichita, Kansas (only John Jacob Miller, seated next to the driver in the first car, is identified ), the third car contains Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Johnson from Sublette, Kansas, and James Septer Patrick is alone in the fourth car. Note the steering wheels are on the right side of the cars.
previewTopeka Harvey House gong
This large brass gong and mallet are from the Topeka Harvey House. This gong was donated by Ralph E. LaBounty, a Fred Harvey executive who once worked as a busboy at the Topeka restaurant. LaBounty had used the gong in his youth, and saved it when the restaurant was torn down. The Harvey Houses were the first chain restaurants, operated in towns along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe rail lines. The gongs were used by employees to alert the waitresses that a train was arriving. Their sound also attracted passengers to the dining room.

The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

Reader, Samuel J.
Hand painted lanternslide in a handmade wood frame. Slide depicts a man punching a "Saloon" signpost. The slide can be manipulated so the man's arm moves in a punching motion. This slide is part of a collection made by Samuel Reader between 1866 and 1913. Reader was a Kansas farmer who was active in the early Topeka community. He built two homes, served in the Civil War, and wrote in a diary nearly every day for 64 years. Reader began painting slides in 1866 and continued throughout much of his life, holding magic lantern shows for the local community in his house and at church.
