Also visible in the photograph are the Deal building and a water tower, both under construction, and people seated in four automobiles. The first two cars contain land buyers from Wichita, Kansas (only John Jacob Miller, seated next to the driver in the first car, is identified ), the third car contains Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Johnson from Sublette, Kansas, and James Septer Patrick is alone in the fourth car. Note the steering wheels are on the right side of the cars.

Bicycle adapted for rail use, Bourbon County, Kansas

This photograph shows a woman with a baby in a carriage and a man on a bicycle that has been uniquely adapted for rail use in Bourbon County, Kansas. The bicycle attachment may be the one manufactured by the C. A. Coey Co. of Chicago, Illinois, and frequently advertised in railroad magazines at that time as a way to avoid the dirt and mud of unpaved roads and streets.

Model Ten Buick

This black and white photograph shows a woman behind the wheel of an early model ten Buick and a male passenger in Greeley, Colorado. In the background, several horses can be seen roaming the open pasture.

William Allen White

This is a photo of William Allen White's family at their cabin in Colorado. Son William Lindsay and daughter Mary Katherine are sitting on a horse with their mother, Sallie, standing next to them. As publisher and editor of the Emporia Gazette, White gained national fame with his editorial "What's the Matter with Kansas?" during the Populist era in the 1890s.

L. W. Halbe Collection

Halbe, L. W. (Leslie Winfield), 1893-1981

The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

Veselik-Gannon photograph collection

The Veselik-Gannon photograph collection documents farming and ranching activities in Sherman County, Kansas, in the early twentieth century. The photographs include images of sod houses and other residences, barns and outbuildings, many children and farm and ranching families, tractors and other farm machinery, horses and cattle, people doing farm chores, cowboys, and early automobiles and motorcycles. The John L. and Mary Veselik residence near Ruleton appears in many of the photographs. The photographer is unknown. Richard Gannon donated copies of the photographs to the Kansas Historical Society in 1983 after discovering them in a building on his property.
