The State Seal of Kansas. The Seal of Kansas and the state motto, Ad astra per aspera (to the stars through difficulties), were adopted through a joint resolution during the first Kansas legislative session on May 25, 1861.

Halbe, L. W. (Leslie Winfield), 1893-1981
The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

During his life, he owned the Long Branch Saloon and a cattle ranch, organized the Cowboy Band, served as sheriff and was a state legislator representing District 101 Dodge City and Ford County for the sessions 1903, SS1903, 1905, 1907, SS1908.
