Daniel Robert Glickman

This is a portrait of Daniel Robert "Dan" Glickman, a native of Wichita Kansas, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas in 1976. For eighteen years, he represented the fourth Congressional district of Kansas until he was defeated for re-election by Todd Tiahrt. After his defeat, President Bill Clinton appointed him to be the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture, where he served from 1995 to 2001.

Charles Patrick (Pat) Roberts

A portrait of Charles Patrick (Pat) Roberts, who was elected in 1980 to the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas' first congressional district. He served until 1997, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. As a senator, he chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee and subcommitte on Emgerging Threats and Capabilities.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius

Kansas Governor Kathleen Gilligan Sebelius was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives and served from 1987 to 1994. In 1994 she successfully ran for state insurance commissioner and became the first Democrat to hold that office in at least 100 years. Sebelius became the second female governor in 2002, when she was elected the forty-fourth Governor of Kansas. She served from January 3, 2003 to April 28, 2009. During her tenure, capital punishment laws were declared unconstitutional by the Kansas Supreme Court and a concealed carry bill was passed into law. On April 28, 2009, the U.S. Senate confirmed her as the 21st United States Secretary of Health and Human Services.

A photograph of Phil Thacher, a Topeka businessman, taken in his office at 107 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. Thacher, who owned Designed Business Interiors, Thacher School Supply and several other businesses and Topeka buildings, worked until he died at age 101. He served on the board of directors for the Topeka Chamber of Commerce, Mid-America Fair, Topeka Country Club, and Fidelity State Bank & Trust Company.

Quentin Herring vidoe interview on experiences in World War II

Herring, Quentin

Lieutenant (jr. grade) Quentin Herring enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served until 1946 in the Navy Air Corps - 196th Patrol Squadron. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Mar 24, 2007. Herring talked about his training in the Navy Air Corps where he learned to fly. You needed to have at least two years of College to become a pilot and had had attended Highland Community College for 2 years after high school. The type of plane he flew was a B24 (the Navy called them PD4Y1's). He primarily flew missions over the Atlantic. He had been sent to California to fight in the Pacific when the atomic bombs were dropped. He was born July 17, 1922 in Sparks, Kansas, and graduated from Sparks High School. After the war, he was a farmer and livestock trader. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. Murl Higgins video interview on experiences in World War II (transcript)

Higgins, Murl

Private First Class [PFC] Murl Higgins was drafted into the Army (Infantry) in 1942 and served until September 26,1945 in the Company B & Hdqtrs, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment. He was trained in heavy weapons but ultimately worked as a barber. Higgins served in the Pacific going from Hawaii to Australia to New Guinea and then the Philippines. He talked about a friend (Sgt. James McFarland from Kentucky) who was killed. He was born near Ponca City, Oklahoma on December 30, 1910, and his family moved to the Pittsburg, Kansas, area when he was about 4 years old. His grandparents lived in Doniphan County, Kansas, and his family moved there when he was approximately 8 years old. He graduated from Severence High School in 1930. He attended barber school in Kansas City but he did not finish. After he got out of service, he worked in a service station, sold used cars, and ultimately worked as a barber for 17 years in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Dec 8, 2006. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. Robert Idol video interview on experiences in World War II (transcript)

Idol, Robert Milward

Robert Idol was drafted into the Army (Infantry) in 1945 and served until 1947 in the Quartermaster Battalion. He was stationed in Manila, Philippines, and was involved in arrangements to sent troops home. He was in Manila when the Philippines received its independence on July 4, 1946. Both General Eisenhower and Gen. MacArthur were there for the event and Idol saw both of them. He family lived in Robinson, Kansas when he was born on October 25, 1926, but he was born in a hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. After attending Kansas University on the G. I. Bill, he became a third generation banker in the family bank. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Feb. 1, 2008. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. Evan Peterson video interview on experiences in World War II

Peterson, Dr. Evan Adolph

Dr. Evan Adolph Peterson enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served until 1946 in the Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) 432. He was stationed in New Guinea, Leyte Bay, and the Philippines. He describes details of his service in the Pacific. He joined the Kansas Air National Guard in 1963. He used the G. I. Bill to attend medical school and he practiced his whole career in Wathena, Kansas. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 25, 1924. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Jan 1, 2007. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants.
