June Chapman with students

This is a view of teacher June Chapman with two of her Tennessee Town Kindergarten students in Topeka, Kansas. This was the kindergarten for African American children sponsored by the Central Congregational Church, Topeka, Kansas. Dr. Charles Monroe Sheldon started the kindergarten in 1893 and served as pastor of the church from 1889-1920.

Schrock, John Edward

This photograph shows the second grade class of Monroe Elementary, with their teacher, Edna Vance, seated at the back of the classroom. In 1992 the Monroe School was designated a National Historic Landmark for its involvement in the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka court case (1954), which determined that the racial segregation of schools was unconstitutional.

Dunlap Academy and Mission School, Dunlap, Kansas

This photograph portrays the students and teachers of the African American school in Dunlap, Morris County, Kansas. Dunlap was located in eastern Morris County and was established in May 1878. The colony was founded by Benjamin Singleton and the Tennessee Real Estate and Homestead Association. This was the last colony Singleton founded in Kansas.

Santa Fe courier nurse

Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company

This black and white photograph shows a Santa Fe courier nurse assisting passengers as they board a train. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company assigned registered nurses, known as couriers, to their passenger trains from the 1930s to the 1960s to attend to the medical needs of passengers. During their cross country travels the nurses, also, carried out certain administrative duties or errands that required attention.

This photograph, from a glass plate negative, shows a group of African American men holding musical instruments alongside two women and children. Alfred Lawrence's studio was located in Lawrence, Kansas, but the actual location of this photograph is not known.

This set of photographs show Kansas Governor Arthur Capper gathered with children and adults during his annual birthday celebration at an unidentified park. The birthday parties, held from 1908-1950, featured free ice cream for the Topeka community.
