T. W. Higginson to William Hutchinson

Higginson, Thomas Wentworth

This letter and accompanying list of forthcoming relief supplies (shirts, dresses, over coats, etc.) is directed to William Hutchinson, "Treasurer Kanzas Committee," by Thomas Wentworth Higginson of Brattleboro, Vermont. Three boxes of clothing had been sent, and Higginson reminds Hutchinson that it was "very important that in this case & in all cases, prompt acknowledgement should be made of the receipt of everything contributed to Kanzas." People need to know that their contributions were getting through and that they were appreciated.

Pomeroy, S. C. (Samuel Clarke), 1816-1891

This letter, written from Atchison by Samuel Pomeroy, was addressed to Thaddeus Hyatt, president of the National Kansas Committee. Pomeroy informed Hyatt of the desperate need for aid, and he related the tale of a young woman who came to him seeking help for their starving families. He also spoke of a man from Eureka who rode 160 miles to obtain bread for himself and his neighbors. Pomeroy promised Hyatt that he would continue to send reports and updates.
