This black and white photograph shows a Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company's funeral train at Temple, Texas. The train carried the remains of ATSF fireman Whittaker to Goldthwaite, Texas after he and engineer Joe Williams were killed by a lone bandit on Saginaw Hill on July 22, 1898.

Allen County, Kansas, floods--1951

These numerous photographs show flooding and flood damage from the Neosho River in Allen County, Kansas. High water marks can be seen on many buildings, as well as debris and destruction left by the water. Many homes, businesses, and public buildings were affected. These photographs were part of a preliminary survey by the Flood Control Committee of the Iola Chamber of Commerce on August 10, 1951. Many of the photos have additional information on their backs.

This black and white photograph shows the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway passenger train pulling into the depot at Guthrie, Oklahoma a day after the Oklahoma Land Run. The event opened up settlement in the Oklahoma territory.

Santa Fe courier nurse

These two black and white photographs shows a Santa Fe courier nurse holding a young child aboard "The Scout". The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company assigned registered nurses, known as couriers, to their passenger trains from the 1930s to the 1960s to attend to the medical needs of passengers. During their cross country travels the nurses, also, assisted with certain administrative duties and errands.

The project was supported by a Kansas Humanities Council Heritage Grant. Fox talks of her family, education, and her memories of the Edwards County community.
