Allen County, Kansas, floods--1951

These numerous photographs show flooding and flood damage from the Neosho River in Allen County, Kansas. High water marks can be seen on many buildings, as well as debris and destruction left by the water. Many homes, businesses, and public buildings were affected. These photographs were part of a preliminary survey by the Flood Control Committee of the Iola Chamber of Commerce on August 10, 1951. Many of the photos have additional information on their backs.

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company assigned registered nurses, known as couriers, to their passenger trains from the 1930s to the 1960s to attend to the medical needs of passengers. During their cross country travels the nurses, also, assisted with certain administrative duties and errands.

This stereograph shows a railroad bridge across the Kansas River at State Line, Kansas. There is a locomotive crossing the bridge and along the banks are logs that have washed up on shore. It is from Alexander Gardner's series, Across the Continent on the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division.

Walter Pearce Hull photograph collection

Walter Pearce Hull, 1870-1956

This series of photographs was taken by Walter Pearce Hull. He was born November 22, 1870, in Eyota, Minnesota, grew up in Athens, Alabama, and moved to Kansas as a young man. His parents were Joseph Gould Hull, born May 4, 1840 in Orangeville, Ohio and Eliza Jane Westfall, born October 29, 1847 in Bushnell, Illinois. By 1894 he was manager of the Northrup Store in Colony. He served as a 1st Lt. In the 20th Kansas Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, 1898-99, during the Philippine-American War, serving on Frederick Funston's staff. He returned to Iola after he was discharged and was manager of the Northrup store there. Hull was a skilled amateur photographer. Many of the photos were taken while he was courting Lenna Myrtle Jolliffe, 1908-1909. They married December 22, 1909 in Bentonville, Arkansas. They lived at 420 S. Washington Street, Iola and had three children: Harriet, born September 29, 1910, Berrien Jolliffe, born October 15, 1913, and Lenna Doris, born December 3, 1915.

Lantry Sharp Construction camp, Abo Canyon, New Mexico

A photograph showing ten workers lounging in hammocks and chairs beneath a canvas shade cloth outside of the engineers' quarters at Lantry-Sharp Construction Company's camp in Sunnyside, Abo Canyon, New Mexico. The two men in the center are possibly F. M. Jones and J. V. Key, engineers for the project. Construction of the AT&SF Railway bridges, tunnels, and tracks in Abo Canyon began in 1905 and the project was completed in 1908. The Lantry-Sharp Construction Company was a contractor on the project.
