Kansas Adjutant General general correspondence

This correspondence was sent and received by the Kansas Adjutant General's Office. Hiram T. Benam served as Adjutant General from 1876-1878 and Peter S. Noble served from 1878-1883. It includes inquiries made from men "anxious for organization" hoping to enlist militias in the towns of Parsons, Independence, Iuka, Lawrence, and Hutchinson. The collection also includes bill of ladings from the Kansas Pacific Railway and Rock Island (Illinois) Arsenal. Frequent correspondence was exchanged with Willis Brown, cashier for the State Bank of Kansas in Seneca, Kansas, Scott Hopkins of the Kansas University Cadets, John T. Bradley, a lawyer from Council Grove and member of the Kansas Senate from 1876 to 1880, F.C. Merrill, a lumber dealer from Paola, and E.D. Rose, a hardware dealer from Holton.

This colored lithograph is a bird's eye view of Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas. It shows an extensive community and the references (legends) identify schools, churches, manufacturing plants, and railroads. The population of Ottawa at this time was 4000. The lithograph shows an extensive railroad machine shops for the Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Galveston Railroad. Insets across the bottom from left to right show: Union School, Ludington House, Hamblin's block including the 1st National Bank, and Ottawa University. The title section of the illustration identifies George W. Hamblin as land agent. Forest Park is shown. The Marais des Cygnes River flows the Ottawa north of the business district. The lithograph was drawn by E. S. Glover and published by the Strobridge & Co. Lith., Cincinnati, Ohio.

Wyandotte County, Kansas

This map from the Kansas State Board of Agriculture's First Biennial Report, shows the townships and towns in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Some points of interest include: a cheese factory, a flour mill, saw mill and railroads. The map also includes a short note about Moses Grinter who owned and operated a trading post, a ferry, and farm. The Grinter family home is preserved as the Grinter Place Historic Site by the Kansas State Historical Society.
