Jim Slattery

This is a portrait of James Charles Slattery who served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 1973-1979. From 1983-1995, he served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas' second Congressional district. He served on the House Energy & Commerce, Veterans' Affairs, Budget, and Banking Committees. In 1994, he ran for Governor of Kansas but lost the election to William Preston "Bill" Graves. In 2008, he made a bid for the U.S. Senate seat held by Senator Pat Roberts, (R-KS). He lost that election.

Dennis Moore

This is a formal portrait of Congressman Dennis Moore. He was first elected to political office in 1977 as Johnson County, Kansas, District Attorney. He held this position until 1989 when he became a member of the board of trustees for Johnson County Community College. In 1998, he challenged incumbent Republican Vince Snowbarger for Kansas's third Congressional district and was elected as the first Democrat in thirty seven years from a traditionally conservative district. As a member of Congress, Moore served on the House Budget Committee and the House Banking Committee. He was a policy co-chair for the Blue Dog Coalition, a coalition created in 1994 to give conservative Democrats a unified voice in the House of Representatives. In addition Moore was also a member of the New Democrat Coalition that allows Democrats in Congress to create and pass legislation that favors a moderate and pro-business view. He left office January 3, 2011. He was born in Anthony, Kansas.

Elden Auker and Dan Lykins

Lykins, Judy

This is a photograph of Elden Auker and Dan Lykins at a Kansas State University function. Auker, from Norcatur, Kansas, was an outstanding athlete at Kansas State University lettering nine times. After leaving college, he played baseball with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns. While with Detroit, Auker went to two consecutive World Series in 1934 and 1935. Dan Lykins, is a Topeka attorney and a member of the Kansas Board of Regents.

Karl Menninger, II

Karl Menninger, II, is the son of Robert Menninger, M.D. and grandson of Karl A. Menninger, M.D. He is an attorney and was a visiting professor in 1991 at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. He lectured on mental health and the legal aspects of the insanity defense.

This is a photograph of Kansas Attorney General Robert T. Stephan shaking hands with United States President George H. W. Bush. After graduating from Washburn University's law school, Robert T. Stephan practiced law in Wichita, Kansas. From 1965 to 1978, he was a district court judge in Wichita, Kansas. In 1979, he was elected Kansas Attorney General and he served in that office for 16 years. He helped craft and eventually win passage of the 1992 Victims' Rights Amendment. The legislation established a compensation fund, crime victims' board, community grants, and revised sentencing guidelines in Kansas. After leaving office, he moved to Lenexa, Kansas, and worked as a corporate legal consultant, dealing principally in consumer protection matters and federal trade commission rules in regard to marketing. Stephan has received many awards for his service to the state and community.

These are panoramic photographs of locations in Kansas created by the Kansas Film Commission to promote scenes to film companies. The panoramics were created by taking individual photos and taping them together. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject and then location. The subject of this part of the collection is businesses, including banks, bars, general stores, food stores, funeral homes, gas stations, hotels, malls, miscellaneous buildings, newspaper offices, restaurants, toy stores, and workshops.

Sherman A. Parks, Jr.

This series of photographs are representations of Sherman A. Parks Jr. as he grows up from adolescence to a young adult. Some of the images of Sherman include him playing in the Sunflower Games, shaking hands with George Brett, attending significant events such as the 1984 Kansas Black legislative Conference, graduation from Washburn University and family photos. Also included is candidate information when Sherman ran for State Representative 59th District, and a newspaper clipping of Sherman being elected executive director of the Kansas Chiropractic Association.
