Bison, Central Plains

Shipshee, Louis

Oil painting of bison by Louis ShipShee, a Potawatomi Indian chief and artist. ShipShee was born August 11, 1896, on the Potawatomi Reservation near Mayetta, Jackson County, Kansas. He was a self-taught artist, know throughout the United States and Europe. He was an instructor at Haskell Indian College from 1932 to 1938, and lived in Topeka from 1952 until his death on June 17, 1975. Provenance of the painting suggests that it was given to Alf Landon by the artist.

L. W. Halbe Collection

Halbe, L. W. (Leslie Winfield), 1893-1981

The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

Thurlow Lieurance and Antonio La Hau

This is a photograph of Thurlow Lieurance, renown composer, and Antonio La Hau. Lieurance's musical career began as a bandsman with the 22nd Kansas Volunteer Regiment during the Spanish American War. Later he studied at the Cincinnati College of Music. Lieurance became fascinated with Native American music and instruments and that fascination led to innumerable compositions, including his best known piece, "By the Waters of Minnetonka," first recorded in 1914. From 1926 to 1945 he was Dean of Fine Arts at Wichita University (now Wichita State University) and took that school's music program to national prominence.

The project was supported by a Kansas Humanities Council Heritage Grant. Frame talks of her family, education, and her memories of the Edwards County community.

Rondelli Remembered: Recital to Honor Her Brilliant Career in Opera and Her Outstanding Success as a Teacher of Classical Voice

Barbara Rondelli Perry was born October 19, 1939 in Chicopee, Kansas. She graduated from Chicopee Grade School (1944-1952), Cherokee High School (1952-1956), and Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg with a Bachelor of Music and Vocal Performance (1956-1960). After graduation, Barbara was a Fulbright Scholar and attended the Royal Academy of Music, London, where she studied with Dame Eva Turner, (1960-1962). Upon graduation, she received a Licentiate Diplomas from the Royal Academy of Music in Performance and Teaching of Singing. Barbara attended the Accademia Chigiana, Siena, Italy, where she studied in Art Song and Performance (1963). In 1963, she married Johan van der Merwe, an orchestral conductor from South Africa. Barbara sang professionally in Europe, America, and South Africa from 1964-1975. In 1978, she received a Master of Music from Kansas State College, Pittsburg, Kansas in Vocal Performance. From 1975-2011, she was Professor of Music and Voice in the Department of Music, University of Toledo and was named Professor Emerita. Her husband Johan van der Merew died in 1996 and she later married Richard Russell Perry, Professor of Higher Education, Emeritus, University of Toledo on June 11, 2000.

Correspondence Elsie N. Allen Art

These are 35 folders that contain letters, booklets, correspondence, news clippings, and art purchase lists. The documents in these folders primarily relate to Elise Nuzman Allen, Henry Allen's wife, and all pertain to different art dealings. Elsie Jane Allen was born on September 27, 1869, the oldest daughter of Frederick C. and Mary Jane (Anderson) Nuzman in Circleville, Kansas. Elsie graduated from Circleville schools, then attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. She graduated from Baker in the class of 1890. She was the First Lady of Kansas from 1919 to 1923. Elsie was a great patron of the arts. She gave her large art collection to Baker University in 1919 and worked to start up the Wichita Arts Association, serving on its board from 1921 till her death in 1951. There are notable names within these folders, some of which include John Taylor Arms, John Steuart Curry, Robert Merrell Gage, William Allen White, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Franklin, Crawford County, Kansas

These 147 images include photographs, newspaper clippings, and original records from the town of Franklin, in Crawford County, Kansas. It is located on U.S. Highway 69 alternate, approximately 7 miles north of Pittsburg, Kansas. The post office was established in 1908 and now operates as part of the post office in Arma. The town was struck by an EF-5 tornado in 2003 and much of the town has been rebuilt since that. Historically, Franklin was a coal mining town, and the major coal companies in the area were Western Coal and Mining, and Central Coal and Coke. The subjects of these materials include: schools, churches, businesses, coal companies, musicians, miners, the unions and strikes--including the Amazon women's march--and baseball, soccer, and basketball players.
