William Agnew Johnston

This is a portrait of William Agnew Johnston, who served as the 11th Kansas Attorney General from January 10, 1881 to December 1, 1884, resigning to become an associate justice of the Kansas Supreme Court in 1885. He went on to serve more than 50 years on the court, including as Chief Justice from 1903 till his retirement in 1935. He was a Republican from Minneapolis, Kansas. Johnston was born July 24, 1848 in Patterson Corners, Ontario, Canada. He moved to Ottawa County, Kansas, in 1872 and practiced law. In 1875 he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives and in 1876 to the Kansas Senate, remaining in the Senate until he was elected Attorney General. He married Lucy Browne in 1875 and supported her work to get the Kansas woman's suffrage amendment passed in 1912. They had two children, Margaret and John Jacob. He died January 23, 1937 in Topeka, Kansas.
