Halbe, L. W. (Leslie Winfield), 1893-1981

The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

This is a group portrait of the students and teachers at the Williams School in District 17, Marion County, Kansas. The Williams School opened in 1873 and was located three miles west of Aulne. The students vary widely in age. The only student that is identified is Bertha Kannengiesser, in the front row, fifth from the left. (The 1900 census shows that Bertha is 13 and living with her family on a farm in Wilson Township, Marion County at this time.)
