Gordon Parks

This photograph illustrates Kansas born photographer, musician, writer and film director Gordon Parks (1912-2006) directing the 1968 film "The Learning Tree". Born in Fort Scott, Kansas, Parks spent much of his youth with relatives in St. Paul, Minnesota where he began establishing himself capturing high fashion and social political movements including the deaths of Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr.

Walter Johnson

This is a photograph of Walter Johnson, 1887-1946, as he appeared pitching for the Washington Senators baseball team at the peak of his career. Nicknamed "The Big Train" for the speed and power of his pitches, Johnson was born and raised on a farm near Humboldt, Kansas.

Reverend Charles Bluejacket

Charles Bluejacket, a mixed-blood Shawnee Indian, came to Kansas (then called Indian Territory) in 1832. He was a well-respected man among the Shawnee Indians, and he became an ordained Methodist minister in 1859. He moved to new Indian territory in Oklahoma in 1871. This photograph, which depicts Bluejacket in his late thirties or forties, was most likely taken in the 1860s or 1870s.

William Allen White

William Allen White,1868-1944, seated at his desk. White, a newspaper editor, had something to say on virtually every topic that had anything to do with Kansas or the nation. Born in Emporia in 1868, he grew up in El Dorado, attended the College of Emporia and the University of Kansas and worked on newspapers in Topeka and Kansas City before buying the Emporia Gazette in 1895.Thereafter until his death in 1944 he wrote countless editorials as well as articles and books that earned him the title of the "Sage of Emporia."
