Santa Fe courier nurse

Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company

This black and white photograph shows a Santa Fe courier nurse attending to a young passenger. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company assigned registered nurses, known as couriers, to their passenger trains from the 1930s to the 1960s to attend to the medical needs of passengers. During their cross country travels, the nurses assisted with certain administrative duties or errands that required attention.

This photograph portrays the students and teachers of the African American school in Dunlap, Morris County, Kansas. Dunlap was located in eastern Morris County and was established in May 1878. The colony was founded by Benjamin Singleton and the Tennessee Real Estate and Homestead Association. This was the last colony Singleton founded in Kansas.

Alfred Mossman Landon

This photograph captures a young Alfred Mossman Landon at the age of two. In the photograph, he is wearing a straw hat with a toy sailboat in a barrel filled with water. Landon would go on to be Kansas governor from 1933 to 1937, and run in the 1936 Republican Presidential election, losing to President Franklin Roosevelt.

Second grade students at Monroe School, Topeka

Schrock, John Edward

This photograph shows the second grade class of Monroe Elementary, with their teacher, Edna Vance, seated at the back of the classroom. In 1992 the Monroe School was designated a National Historic Landmark for its involvement in the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka court case (1954), which determined that the racial segregation of schools was unconstitutional.
