Commercial street, Oswego, Kansas
This black and white photograph shows the west side of Commercial Street in Oswego, Kansas. The store fronts with their wooden frames were destroyed by a fire in 1884 and later replaced by masonry buildings. In the foreground Jabez Zink and his team of horse are visible. He settled in 1865 on Labette Creek and eventually became the mayor of Oswego. There is also a stage coach that operated from Oswego to Independence and Coffeyville.

This kerosene wagon was once used by the Grimes family of Arkansas City for home delivery of kerosene to customers. When the photograph was taken, the tank was 62 years old and owned by Harry Grimes of Arkansas City. His grandfather and father both sold kerosene from it, driving up and down city streets and country roads.

This black and white photograph shows the Oklahoma land run. The image taken at noon on September 16, 1893, indicates the opening of public land to white settlers in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. Under the Homestead Act of 1862, a settler could claim 160 acres of land if they lived on the claim and made steady improvements to it. If those requirements were met at the end of five years, the homesteader could file for the title of the land with the United States government.
