Dad's Beanery, Marysville, Kansas

Hawkins, Omar F. (Omar Finlay), 1890-1967

This is a view of two men seated on a bench and a restaurant employee in front of Dad's Beanery at 110 North 7th Street in Marysville, Kansas. Located less than a block south of the train depot, the two seated men are very likely salesmen. A sandwich board sign at the sidewalk's curb indicates the restaurant offered short-order meals at all hours and sold soft drinks, cigars, and tobacco. By 1939, Dad's Beanery would have been replaced by the Depot Cafe built on this same corner.

L. W. Halbe Collection

Halbe, L. W. (Leslie Winfield), 1893-1981

The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

These three photographs show interior views of the Round Corner Drug Store, located at 8th and Massachusetts streets in Lawrence, Kansas. In the first photograph, dated around 1915, the soda fountain counter is visible, and several employees and customers are in the store. The man second from the right is identified as W. H. Varnum, an owner of the store. The second photograph shows four men in the store (left to right): Francis Benedict, George Lowman, Dr. E. H. Varnum, and W. H. Varnum. The third photograph, dated January 20, 1922, shows a view of the soda fountain. The man standing third from the left is Francis Benedict.

In the second photograph, two men are visible standing in front of the drug store, and another man is visible standing in front of the Post Office. The photograph identifies R. W. Hull as the proprietor. The sign above the corner door visible on the left side of the picture reads, "Drugs," and the sign above the windows reads, "Ice cream, candies, and cigars." Some advertising signs are partially visible in the window of the drug store. A small sign reading "Post Office" is partially visible in front of the windows of the building on the right.
