Street scene, new Ulysses, Grant County, Kansas

This is a photograph of a Saturday afternoon street scene in "new" Ulysses, Grant County, Kansas. All trading was done every Saturday and people stayed in town all day long. On February 6, 1909, the town was moved from its original location to escape payment of $35,000 in bonds plus $10,000 interest for waterworks and other improvements. The indebtedness was greater than the assessed valuation of the property.

This is a view of spectators and flood waters from Third Street looking east on Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, Kansas. The Blue River bridge is visible at the far end of Poyntz Avenue. Also visible are horse-drawn carriages and wagons, a streetlight suspended above the intersection, utility poles and power lines, and the buildings and businesses along the city street.

Nicodemus, Kansas

This photograph captures the bustling main street in Nicodemus, Graham County, a settlement founded by African Americans in 1877. It includes a number of townspeople and the Williams Mercantile store. The building on the far left is believed to be the First Baptist Church. The new First Baptist Church was built in 1907 around this church; once the new building was completed, Nicodemus residents demolished the original church. The new building is now part of the National Parks Service historic site.

Fry, driver of the tail wagon; Bill Campbell, train master; Joe Mason, scout; Fred or Bill LeGrande; Horace Greeley, ____ Pratt; and ____ Myers of Myers & Leonard. The train traveled about 20 miles a day.
