Kansas Official Council, Topeka, Kansas

This is a panoramic photo of the members of the Kansas Official Council, Topeka, Kansas, grouped on the steps of the Capitol. This is a gathering of various county officials and the 1924 meeting was, apparently, the largest group to that time. A newspaper article indicated that 750 people attended. There is a banner that says "Kansas Grows the Best Wheat in the World." A boys band, including some African-American boys, is kneeling at the front of the group.

Excavations at the Ritchie House, 14SH370

These photographs were taken by Kansas Historical Society archeological staff during excavations at the Ritchie House in Shawnee County in 1996 and 1997. The limited excavations were undertaken in 1997 to gain information regarding the construction of the house and modifications to the yard. A year earlier Kansas Historical Society archeology staff had conducted a preliminary examination of the property and held an archeological summer workshop for children at the site. Shown are two views showing the north house construction, two views of a retaining wall and window well, a trench, a cistern that was exposed, artifacts collected from the site, and two views of the workshop. John and Mary Ritchie and their family moved to Topeka in 1854 where they were instrumental in advocating for abolition and women's rights and active in farming, real estate development, and politics.
