Evan Peterson video interview on experiences in World War II

Peterson, Dr. Evan Adolph

Dr. Evan Adolph Peterson enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served until 1946 in the Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) 432. He was stationed in New Guinea, Leyte Bay, and the Philippines. He describes details of his service in the Pacific. He joined the Kansas Air National Guard in 1963. He used the G. I. Bill to attend medical school and he practiced his whole career in Wathena, Kansas. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 25, 1924. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Jan 1, 2007. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. John Clifford video interview on experiences in World War II (transcript)

Clifford, John

John Clifford was inducted into the United States Army in 1941 and served until 1946. Clifford wanted to be a writer before being drafted into the Army in 1941 and pursued various efforts related to writing--before, during, and after the war. He was stationed at Fort Monmouth, Ne Jersey, as a clerk and at Camp Crowder, Missouri. He met his wife to be at a USO dance in Joplin, Missouri. He served in hospitals in New Guinea and the Philippines. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on Aug 28, 2007, Clifford talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was born in Sprinfield, Illinois, November 19, 1918. After the war, he attended Emporia State Teachers College on the G.I. Bill. After a couple of different jobs, he joined the staff of Centron Films in Lawrence and worked there for 23 years. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. Orvel Criqui video interview on experiences in World War II (transcript)

Criqui, Orvel

Orvel Criqui enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served until 1946. He was sent to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa for Navy Aviation training. He was then sent to Las Vegas, New Mexico but he became ill with pneumonia and scarlet fever. He was sent to a hospital in San Diego. He was slow to recover and received an honorable medical discharge. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on Aug 23, 2007, Criqui talked about military experiences in the Second World War. Criqui was born on a farm near Melvern, Osage County on May 28, 1924. He married his wife Eleanor while he was in the hospital in San Diego. After the war, he attended Emporia State University on the G. I. Bill and became a teacher. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. Robert Laushman video interview on experiences in World War II (transcript)

Laushman, Robert

Robert Laushman enlisted in the Army (Air Force) in 1943 and served until 1945 in the 39th Air Depot Group Dance Band, 11th Air Force. He spent most of his time in the service at Elmendorf Field, Anchoarge, Alaska. Interviewed by Nancy L. Porter on Nov 9, 2007, Laushman talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 6, 1923, and graduated from Omaha South High School in June l942. He enlisted in the Air Force and was called up in April 1943. He attended Hastings College in Nebraska until he was called up. After the war, he attended Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, on the G. I. Bill. He worked a number of years as a high school band director. It is not clear when he and his wife moved to Lawrence, Kansas. Colmery desk

Wooden desk with green leather top. Harry W. Colmery (1890-1979) sat at this desk at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. while hand-writing the first draft of what would become the Serviceman?s Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the G.I. Bill of Rights, over a period of five months. The desk was later moved to Colmery's law office in Topeka.
