This black and white photograph shows Kansas Lieutenant Governor Fred Lee Hall (1916-1970), campaigning for governor in Dodge City, Kansas. Hall's platform was calling for reform to clean up Topeka, Kansas, similarly to President Eisenhower's efforts to clean up Washington, D. C. In the November general election he defeated his Democratic challenger George Docking to become the thirty-third governor of Kansas, serving from 1955 to 1957. Hall served one term as governor and was unsuccessful in his attempt for a second term. He resigned in the final days of his administration on January 11, 1957 accepting the appointment as justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from 1957 to 1958 before stepping down to run for the governor?s office again. After being unsuccessful, he retired from his political career.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the C. F. Menninger Memorial Hospital in Topeka, Kansas

These photographs show the ground breaking ceremonies for the C. F. Menninger Memorial Hospital. This took place on Dr. C. F.'s 90th birthday. Dr. C.F. Menninger and his sons, Dr. Karl and Dr. Will, founded the Menninger Clinic for mental-health treatment, education, research, and prevention in Topeka in 1925. This addition to the 'East Campus' was in 1952.

The Prairie Castle

Birger Sandzen

Woodblock print on white paper, depicting a towering rock formation. This print is the work of Birger Sandzen (1871-1954), a Swedish immigrant who came to Lindsborg, Kansas in 1894 to teach at Bethany College. While best known for working in oil, Sandzen also was a member of the Prairie Print Makers and successful at producing art prints.The print was done between 1916 and 1952.
