Fred Glasse Gurley

A portrait of Fred Glasse Gurley, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway president (1944-1957) and chairman of the board (1958-1959). Gurley retired in 1959, but stayed on as a director until 1964. At that time, he was named an honorary director for life by the railroad.

Excavation at 14GE127

Shown are two views of two house features at 14GE127. The slides were taken in 1963 by then State Archeologist T. Witty. The site was excavated by University of Nebraska archeologists and revealed interior pits and post molds within the house features. It was occupied by Smoky Hill aspect peoples at some point during the Middle Ceramic period, 1000 A.D. to 1500 A.D. The site is now under Milford Lake.

The West Island Site in Phillips County, 14PH10

Shown is a view of the West Island site taken in 1963 by State Archeologist T. Witty. The site was first exposed by erosion and revealed human remains (none pictured), bone, pottery and chipped stone artifacts. Shown here is a profile of excavation unit 142. The Keith phase site would have been occupied sometime between 500 and 1100 CE.
