This is a portrait of Harry Walter Colmery, 1890-1979, Topeka attorney, American Legion National Commander, and author of the G. I. Bill of Rights. The photograph was taken when he was a young boy.

Fred Andrew and Eddie Stone

Fred Andrew Stone, 1873-1959, actor and author, with his brother Eddie (d.1903), copied from Rolling Stone. The photograph is captiioned "Under the Big Top 'My little brother was top mounter.'" Fred and Eddie Stone performed in vaudeville, stage musicals, and movies. They were known especially for their acrobatic dancing and engaging onstage personality. The Stones were raised in Topeka, Kansas, and they made their stage debut as young children.

Menninger family

Children of Dr. C. F. and Flo Menninger, (left to right) Karl (age 7), William (age 1), and Edwin (age 4). Karl and William obtained their medical degrees, completed psychiatric training, and helped their father establish the Menninger Clinic, in Topeka, Kansas, an internationally known psychiatric treatment and training facility. Edwin was a publisher.

William Henry Avery

A photograph of Governor William Henry Avery with two young boys in wheelchairs. This photograph of Avery was probably campaigning for a second term as governor. He was born August 11, 1911 near Wakefield, Kansas, and graduated from Wakefield High School and the University of Kansas. In 1964, Avery was elected the 37th governor of Kansas. He served one term as governor, losing a re-election bid to Robert Docking in 1966.

L. W. Halbe Collection

Halbe, L. W. (Leslie Winfield), 1893-1981

The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

Fletcher Bowman Howe family

This is a postcard view of the Howe family: (front row) Helen, Clara, Jenny, Bernice, Alice and Dick; (back row) Clifford, George, Edna and Mark. In 1873, Clara Livona McCreery Howes and her husband Fletcher Bowman Howes came to Jewell County, Kansas with their two sons Mark Watson Howe and George Christina Howe. They homesteaded and farmed near Esbon, Kansas.

Shoe Shop School scene, Finney County, Kansas

Maude Elliott explains on the back of the photograph how the chuck wagon she was using as a school progressed into a shoe shop in Garden City. When the new district was opened, the wagon was hitched behind a pair of mules who drew it to the new school location. Maude Elliott was supposed to get a new school house, but unfortunately the new school building was still unfinished by the time she left.

Shoe Shop School, Finney County, Kansas

This photograph shows the Shoe Shop School with paper covering the sides, wheels, and all. The paper proved to be poor insulation and did not keep the wind or the children from slipping under the school room floor. The ten children pictured were only half of Maude Elliott's pupils. She taught thirty-two classes a day, all eight grades.
