View on Kansas MemoryThis photograph shows the Beaumont Hotel looking northwest, in Beaumont, Kansas. The hotel started out as a place to stay for stagecoach travelers. Local rancher and businessman Clint Squier acquired and remodeled the hotel in 1953. Squier initially intended for the hotel to house cattleman vising his ranch from Texas, many of whom had by then switched from train travel to plane and were landing on a grass airstrip in a nearby pasture. The hotel proved popular with other businessmen, hobby pilots, and tourists. In 1962, the owner removed the fence between the hotel and the airstrip, allowing pilots to taxi directly from the runway down the street, and into the hotel parking lot. The Beaumont still operates as a hotel and restaurant.
