Physical Description: A total of three valentines were originally pasted inside scrapbook. The Conservator removed them. Handmade valentine card made from folded off-white paper with embossed border. It is glued with scrap: a classical bust at top, floral spray at center. Leaves at the bottom. Between the leaves at the bottom of the card is small piece of paper with a short poetic verse printed in black ink.

History of Object: Joseph Forrest sent Valentines to Elizabeth Ehrhart during the Civil War. They were residents of Macon County, IL, and became engaged in 1858. Joseph enlisted on July 25, 1861 at Decatur, IL and fought as a private with Co. A of 8th IL Volunteer Infantry. The couple married Aug. 9, 1863. The Forrests moved to Jewell County, Kansas in 1872, where Joseph served as a Methodist Minister. In 1875, they moved to Minneapolis, Kansas.

To go with / the other three- / LF || [in black text on small cut paper between green leaves] Fondly I gaze in / Thy sweet face, / And clasp thy little / Hand in mine, / Love swiftly speeds / Us to the place / Where I shall claim / My Valentine || [inside card in blue handwriting] This folder Valentine likely had a suita- / ble envelope or box, but I don't remember ever / seeing one. The three were put in box to / keep the four together. This explains why I / crease at top to get his folder one in / the box. L.F. ||
