Accession Number: 1993.78.0

Physical Description: Small quilted wall hanging features blocks depicting cedar trees (apparently a unique design) alternating with Nine Patch squares. All-over set with pieced blocks. Seven tree blocks with dark green trees having dark brown trunks, on a pink sprigged background. Nine Patch blocks incorporate same sprigged fabric, plus solid pink and light brown pieces. Border has three strips of solid fabrics—pink, light brown, and dark green. Dark green binding. Backing of pink sprigged fabric. Hand-quilted in outline stitching on tree blocks, with grid quilting on Nine Patches. Machine-stitched. Off-white muslin label with typewritten provenance is stitched to bottom center on backing. Pair of hanging loops stitched to top of backing.

History of Object: As indicated by the label sewn to the backing, this small quilted wall hanging was made by Arlene Anderson and auctioned off on Apr. 30, 1988 for the benefit of the Kansas Quilt Project. The donor/quiltmaker was married to John Anderson, Jr., who was Governor of Kansas from 1961-1965. The Andersons were the first governor?s family to occupy Cedar Crest, the Kansas executive residence, beginning in 1962. Cedar Crest was built by Frank and Marge MacLennan in the late 1920s and left to the state (along with 244 acres) when Marge died in 1955. The MacLennons named the house Cedar Crest because of its location on the crest of a hill overlooking the Kansas River valley, which was filled with cedars.
