Physical Description: Oval jet brooch depicting profile of classical female. Vertically oriented brooch features unpolished medallion in high relief. Female bust sporting a single rose and stalks of grain in her hair, and loose-fitting robes are visible at her shoulders. Matt jet medallion is enclosed in polished jet border. Brass pin back adhered to jet bar across back.

History of Object: From the estate of Miss Clara May Hesse (1885-1964) of St. Marys, Kansas. She was a teacher. Her father was from Germany and served with the Third Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War, moving to St. Marys in 1869. Her mother was from Ohio and moved with her parents to Belvue, Kansas, in 1868.
