View at Kansas Memory

Accession Number: 1892.17.1

Physical Description: Green pinstriped cloth fragment from the Dalton Gang. Irregular-shaped wool fragment with one right angle. Light horizontal crease in center.

History of Object: According to the KSHS Eight Biennial Report, this fragment of pants was worn a member of the Dalton Gang killed in a shootout following a failed bank robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas, on October 5, 1892. Photographs of deceased gang members indicate this fragment belonged to Gratton Dalton. J.J. Rambo, a newspaper editor from nearby Chetopa, Kansas, donated this fragment that year. Sightseers descended on Coffeyville following the shooting, taking pieces of clothing from the infamous gang. Rambo may have done the same while reporting on the events for his newspaper.
