Accession Number: 1998.44.0

Physical Description: Small quilt or throw in Crazy Quilt design, featuring many irregularly shaped pieces of mostly synthetic fabrics stitched to a cotton foundation fabric, and backed with silk ribbons awarded at Kansas fairs. Top is formed of eight Crazy Quilt blocks, with each piece outlined in embroidery stitches worked in cotton thread. Narrow sawtooth edge formed of purple silk ribbons folded to create points. Backing is made up of 307 complete silk fair ribbons (and portions of others) sewn to each other in 13 rows. Bands of dark blue synthetic fabric along top and bottom. Ribbons are purple (Champion) blue (First Premium), red (Second), white (Third), plus a few pink (Fourth) and one yellow (Fifth). Ribbons are stamped in gold and/or silver in text associating them with Thomas and Trego county fairs dating from 1929 to 1940. Many also are stamped with the Kansas state seal or 4-H club logo. One ribbon is from the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, and another from Kansas State University. Machine- and hand-stitched.

History of Object: According to donor?s notes in Info File, this quilt was made by her mother, Edna J. Vawter. The border is made up of rosettes of purple ribbons the donor, Roberta Vawter Meek, won by showing her 4-H Club swine in both the 4-H and open classes at the Thomas County Fair. Edna Vawter was born in David City, Nebraska, in 1890, and moved to Sheridan County, Kansas, in 1898, then on to Thomas County in 1906. She married Robert Harrison Vawter in 1912. She worked as correspondent for the Oakley Graphic newspaper for over 50 years. Edna sewed together her daughter?s award ribbons into the backing for this quilt. According to the donor, Roberta, her 4-H Club winnings paid for her wardrobe throughout high school and the first year of college. One pink ribbon near the center was awarded to Roberta while she was a member of the Meat Judging Team as a Home Economics student at Kansas State University (she graduated in 1941).
