Physical Description: Unfinished oil painting by Albert T. Reid depicting George Armstrong Custer leading the soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry out of Fort Hays. Custer is in the left foreground. The line of soldiers, riding four to five abreast, curve back behind him through the right midground, and Fort Hays is in the left background. The painting is fully blocked in but lacks some colors and details. Unsigned and undated. The canvas is mounted on a wooden strainer, and the tacking edge is covered with masking tape.

History of Object: The artist began the painting as a result of a local campaign to commission the work. The campaign failed to reach its target amount, however, and the artist stopped work on the painting.

Date: Between 1945 and 1955
