The murals in the east and west wings on the second floor represent some of the finest public art in the country. They were created by John Steuart Curry (1897-1946), a regionalist painter and contemporary of Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Born near Dunavant in Jefferson County, Curry’s paintings created a major controversy over art in public buildings. He ceased his work in the summer of 1942 and left the murals unsigned.
