Read Kansas! Middle School - M-01 Know Your Government

The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with the Bill of Rights portion of the Kansas Constitution.  Working in pairs, students will interpret one or more of the 20 rights specifically given to Kansas citizens in the state constitution.  Each pair will produce a poster, define the related vocabulary, and present to the class.  As an extended activity each student can submit an article from a contemporary source that illustrates one of the Kansas Bill of Rights.  This lesson will take two class days, with the extended activity occurring by a specific deadline.

Kansas History, Government and Social Studies Standards:

Standard #2: Individuals have rights and responsibilities.

  • 2.1: The student will recognize and evaluate the rights and responsibilities of people living in societies.

Kansas College and Career Ready Standards:

  • RH.6-8.4: The student determines the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
  • RI.7.1: The student cites several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
  • SL.7.1 (a-d): The student will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • SL.7.4: The student will present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and examples; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
