Read Kansas! Primary - P-16 Holidays in Kansas

This lesson is designed to teach third grade students about eight holidays celebrated by different cultural groups in Kansas. Using information from the Read Kansas! cards, students will practice sequencing instructions for a food recipe or craft item relating to that holiday. Making the craft and food item can be an extended activity. The lesson is organized seasonally so it can be used throughout the school year to teach the respective holidays. Select each image to see a PDF with the front and back of each card.

Lesson plan

Spanish translations for each card have been provided by students in the Spanish classes of Roberto Barrera, Fredonia High School.

Note: The sentence on the Ramadan card stating that the holiday falls anywhere between November and February is incorrect. Ramadan is based on the Islamic calendar, a lunar calendar with each month beginning with the first appearance of the crescent of a new moon.  Therefore, the celebration of Ramadan varies throughout the year.
